DIY Essential Oil Infused Wool Dryer Balls

I’m slowly replacing store bought, toxic ridden products in my home with homemade, clean versions.  Since dryer sheets are not the healthiest products to have on hand, I am finally replacing them with wool dryer balls.  You can buy premade ones on Amazon or Etsy but, in all honesty, they are quite easy to make yourself!

Wool Dryer Balls:

Reduce dryer time… this is huge for the Houston clan with the high price of electricity in Hawaii!

Allow you to create your own laundry scent.

Reduce wrinkles, soften laundry, and reduce static cling.

Are toxic free, contrary to their dryer sheet partners.

Are quite inexpensive.

What’s not to love?!

What you need:

  • 6 skeins of wool yarn (You need 4-5 to really make a difference and let’s face it…you’re going to lose one at some point!)
  • Scissors
  • Pantyhose
  • Essential oil of your choice

I chose Knit Picks’ Wool of the Andes brand because they are 100% wool and the colors are outstanding.  Each skein will make you one wool dryer ball.

Instructions:

First, slowly unravel your yarn and wrap the end around your fingers about a dozen times.  Then, tie that in a knot and it should look like a bow.

Next, start wrapping your yarn around the knotted area, rotating the ball to keep it as even as possible.  Continue wrapping the yarn tightly and evenly until you can tuck your end in securely.

Repeat this process with all of your skeins.

Next, cover your wool ball by slipping your hand in the panty hose, grabbing the ball, and pulling it through.  Once it is pulled through, simply tie the end and cut it off.  You need to do this with all of your balls so you can tie an end of the hose and repeat.

Once you have finished all 6, wash and dry them on the hottest setting a few times until they felt.  Save money by throwing these in with a dirty load of laundry!  Mine took about 4 cycles of both washing and drying.

Next, peel the pantyhose off the wool and you’re set!  Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to each ball or mix a few to create your own scent.  I typically use Purification, Joy, and Lemon.

A few drops of oil will last a few loads!  Need help getting started with essential oils?  Start here!
